Carte Noire indicates that the Champagne was produced with only Red grapes.

A quick check of the internet didn't confirm this and only showed the 3 traditional white grapes.

I am confused.

I think this is a Red grape Cava, but I am not sure. It is only $7.99, check it out and let me know!

Hey welcome. Domain Dave again from cheapwinefinder.com where we're going to talk about another value-priced wine. And uh what we have today is a cava, which is uh traditionally produced champagne style wine from eastern Spain in the neighborhood of Barcelona, up that way, down that way anyway. And it's the M. Chevalay Carter Noir Brut Cava. Now, this is a cava from the Raventos Cordonou uh winery, uh so in the back. Um Cordonu is, I hope I'm pronouncing that right, has been around since um 1500s. They're the oldest winery in Spain, and the Raventos Cordonu wine company is the is the oldest cava producer. They've been in the business forever. I'm gonna take a sip. That's pretty good. And it's $7.99. Uh we cheap winefinder did a review of this in uh 2019 before the uh COVID, and it was $5.99 then. It's gone up $2, but it's still very cheap. $8 for a solid uh traditionally uh styled kava, champagne-style sparkling wine is good. Now here's where it gets a little weird for me. Part of the name of the title was M. Chevalay Carte Noir Brut Cava. Carte noir in champagne means bubbling made from red grapes and only red grapes. Now, kava is normally made from the three indigenous grapes, uh Charlo, Perlata, and Maccabio. They're the three local grapes, and that's what you get most of the time. Though I looked it up, and you can get Pinot Noir, you can get grenacha, you can get um monestro. I mean, there are ways of getting red grapes in there, but why would they put that in the title if they didn't use red grapes? And I can't find anything anywhere. I'm gonna take a sip that says they used anything other than the three white grapes. Until I start to taste it, and I don't know if it's just the power suggestion, and I now think that this is uh made from red grapes, but I kind of got that feeling. Even when I get uh a champagne with uh Pinot Noir as a first grape, I still get uh grapefruit and I still get um apples and you know I get lemons in there too. I mean, it doesn't always hit you with cherries and whatever. I'm gonna take another sip. This is good. Yeah, it's got a nice finish to it. It tastes good. I think this is made from it could be the power suggestion, but I think it tastes like it might have red grapes in there, but it doesn't taste like a normal kava to me. And it might not be a Pinot Noir, but I don't know what a sparkling wine with monasteril and Granacha might have in it, and maybe it it doesn't say, but in the title it says cate noir, which for kava shouldn't be there, especially for a $7.99 kava. And it used to be $5.99 kava. So it might have been an experiment, and they sold it to Trader Joe to see who likes it. And well, I do. It's one person who likes it. So this you might taste it and go, uh, he's out of his mind. He read uh he saw the name uh Cardi Noir, and it's just 100% the three grapes. But that you're that I'm having a tug of war with a eight-buck sparkling wine is a pretty good, it's pretty good. Just took my fourth sip, which you know I always say I don't give uh letter grades, I don't give um stars, I don't do any of that, but I do take sips. The more sips I get, the more I seem to like it. And here we go here. This is the M Chavet or Chevalier. It's uh C-H-E-V-A-L-L-I-E-R, which sounds French to me, but it's from Spain, and it really tastes nice, and I don't know much more than that. 11.5% alcohol. I I know it's um uh what's the name uh in the back here. It's a guarda wine. Guarda is one of the um differentiations for kava, and it means it was the second fermentation in the bottle, lasted a minimum of nine months, and then it goes up to 18 months and and beyond that. So this is the base price or the base level, which for probably is fine. I mean it's a lot warmer in um in Spain than it is up in uh Champagne. That might have something to do with it, though it's it's in a cave when it's aging. I don't know. I like it. I didn't expect to like it as much as I do. I'm taking my fifth step. I've read that um people say it's a really good champ. I mean, that other reviews, and I try not to read those, but I did this time and I said it's a really good bubbly, but it's not high level. It's not something you would have on New Year's Eve or a wedding. And I'm thinking, heck, if you're out of budget, you know, maybe get a half bottle of uh Dom or the Bride and Groom, and everybody else drinks this and they're happy at eight bucks. So there you go.
